CrossFit Kids is not simply a scaled down version of CrossFit, it is entirely and absolutely CrossFit geared toward kids and their specific developmental needs. CrossFit Kids is the principal strength and conditioning program for many young athletes and the primary P.E. program for many home schools, charter schools. It is used by athletic teams, martial arts schools and many parents that want their kids to grow up healthy, strong and have a lifelong love of working out thus avoiding the common problems associated with childhood inactivity and obesity.
It is understandable why parents might be anxious about the idea of CrossFit for kids if they're imagining children performing deadlifts and clean and jerks. But the movements for preschoolers are closer to things one would see in normal play than anything an adult would do in the gym. And considering kids are spending more time than ever sitting, staring at screens (on average, seven hours a day, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics), a little more play, even if it's structured like a workout, can only be a good thing.
CrossFit is similar to sports and martial arts in how it can develop children on an emotional level. At Yucaipa CrossFit, we work with kids on sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, listening skills, self-discipline and manners. These are all skills, though not physical, that will help kids become successful later in life. Becca Borawski Jenkins discusses the many benefits of a CrossFit Kids program in her article. We want to inspire kids to develop a lifelong passion for fitness. Becca states that it is important to make sure kids find fitness fun – if children grow up associating working out with being something enjoyable and clearly seeing the benefits to their bodies and health, then they are more likely to keep fitness as a priority throughout their lives. Eating healthy becomes a natural and normal choice and being active becomes something they just do. The benefits of a program like CrossFit Kids can be long lasting for children, both physically and mentally, and it is a great activity for children to get into at any age.
For our Kids and Teens Class, CrossFit is a fun and efficient way for young athletes to develop the strength and conditioning base they need to excel in their sport of choice.
As a parent, I want my kids to grow up healthy, strong and have a life long love of working out thus avoiding the common problems associated with childhood inactivity and obesity. Healthy living requires that our kids push, pull, run, throw, climb, lift, jump, effectively and safely regardless of whether or not they play athletics. And we do all of that in the CrossFit Kids program. Let’s empower our children to develop control. Help them form a foundation for healthy habits physically and mentally. Let’s get the children stronger, moving better, increase their flexibility and mobility, and let’s HAVE FUN!!!
